THE LYRIK RABINDRANATH TAGORES IN SETS OF WESTERN COMPOSERS

TAGORIANA

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) is considered the most important Indian modern poet.

Tagore’s universal genius has often been compared to Goethe’s.

The West “discovered” him in 1912 after he himself selected a selection of his poems

translated into English under the title ‘Gitanjali’. In 1913 he already received it

as the first writer outside the western culture to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.

This literally triggered a ‘Tagore mania’ in the West. His poetry has been published in numerous

European languages, and inspired many western composers.

Among other things, English, Italian, French, Russian or German Tagore songs.

Tagore was not only a poet, storyteller, playwright and musician, but also a social reformer, political activist,

Philosopher and mystic. As such, he is still revered in Europe as the “wise man of the east”.

Musician Tagore in particular is still very present in Indian culture: the national anthems by

India and Bangladesh come from him.

On the other hand, the settings of his poetry by Western composers are rarely heard today.

The concert ‘TAGORIANA’ would like to invite its audience on a journey of discovery to these Tagore songs.

Soprano Verena Barth has had a special love for classical piano song, but also for Indian culture, for many years.

She has often been a guest at the Künstlerhaus with extraordinary song concerts,

she also regularly performs here with the improvisation-opera ensemble LaTRIVIATA.

In addition, she sings in opera productions (including Lady Macbeth, Ariadne on Naxos, Tosca, Rosalinde) and concerts.

The pianist and conductor Stellario Fagone has been at the Bavarian State Opera since 2006, and has been choir director there since 2018.

He has also worked regularly with the Bavarian Radio Choir since 2011.

He has appeared as a conductor of symphonic concerts all over Europe, and his concert activity as a piano accompanist has led him with well-known singers

all over the world. Highlights included concerts with Jonas Kaufmann in Megaron (Athens), Palazzo Farnese (Rome), Montecarlo and Teatro San Carlo in Naples.
